Michael Koncz, the adviser for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, loves the idea of a showdown with Antonio Margarito, a former three time champion at 147-pounds. Top Rank, who promote Pacquiao, are currently negotiating a deal with Golden Boy Promotions to make a November super-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. If that fight falls through, then Margarito, also promoted by Top Rank, has claimed first crack at Pacquiao.
Margarito would first have to get licensed to fight in the United States. The Mexican ex-champion has not fought in the United States since the TKO loss to Shane Mosley on January 24, 2009 - the same night a foreign substance was discovered inside of his hand-wraps. Margarito's boxing license was revoked for a period of one year during a hearing before the California commission in February 2009. He can apply to get re-licensed at any time, but there is no guarantee the California State Athletic Commission will approve his application.
If everything falls into place, and the fight take shape, Koncz expects an active war between two boxers who like to fight. He thinks the style of Margarito will compliment the way Pacquiao fights. Unlike Pacquiao's one-sided decision win over Joshua Clottey back in March, Koncz fully expects Pacquiao-Margarito to end in a knockout with a lot of punches being exchanged along way.
"I think that the Antonio Margarito fight is a good style and it will make an exciting fight because he's going to come straight at you and go toe-to-toe. I don't think that it will go twelve rounds, but it will certainly be exciting for as long as it lasts," Koncz said.
