Promoter Frank Warren has voiced his take on Don King's recently filed petition to overturn Amir Khan's technical decision win over Marco Antonio Barrera, which took place on March 14 in Manchester. Barrera suffered a bad gash, from a clash of heads, in the first round and the blood poured out like a river until the fight was finally stopped in the fifth and went to the cards. King filed a petition to have the decision changed to a no-contest, writing that Barrera's vision was severely impaired from the blood and the fight should of been stopped in the very first round. He is also pushing for an immediate rematch.
Warren disagrees and says Barerra and his corner had every opportunity to have the fight stopped. He says Barrera and his corner made no attempt to have the fight stopped when the doctor examined the cut in the fourth round. If the fight would have been stopped in the fourth, a no-decision would have been rendered.
"Don King has lodged an official complaint about Amir Khan’s win over Marco Antonio Barrera in Manchester earlier this month. The fight was stopped on a cut in the fifth round, but King claims that it should have been halted in the first, as soon as the clash of heads happened. The cut was a bad one and Barrera could have told the referee he was in no state to fight, but insisted he wanted to box on. His corner also made no attempt to pull him out nor did the doctor who examined the cut between rounds. King, whose complaints smack of sour grapes, says he wants an immediate rematch. But it was clear to everyone watching that the cut eye stoppage did Barrera a favor, because he was well on the way to being halted anyway," Warren said.
