British star Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) believes that both he and Andre Berto are the two fighters in the running to face WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs) on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Khan and Berto are stablemates under trainer Virgil Hunter. They also share the same adviser in Al Haymon, who also works with Mayweather.
Khan has long been rumored to be the opponent for Mayweather. But every time it appears the Bolton boxer will land the opportunity, Mayweather comes out of left field with a different selection.
Berto is one of the names that Mayweather mentioned last month as a leading candidate for the slot. There is heavy industry talk that Mayweather and Berto could face each other in a network television headliner on CBS, and not on a pay-per-view platform.
"There are talks that the Mayweather fight might still happen. It's between me and Andre Berto I really believe. Can it happen? I really think it can. I spoke to my trainer and a few people in my team and they think that me and Floyd Mayweather can happen. He likes to make his opponents wait," Khan told Sport360.
Khan recently spoke to Haymon. The powerful adviser told him that Mayweather has yet to make decision on his next opponent.
"He says that Floyd hasn't made his mind up yet. Floyd is the boss in his own promotional company like I'm the boss in mine. But the thing is, he picks and chooses when he wants to fight and who he fights. I don't think Al Haymon has much say, he can only advise him. I'm sure he's going to be pushing for me to fight him because it has been talked about for such a long time," Khan said.
