Former world champion Amir Khan (31-4, 19KOs) maintains that Mexico superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs) must step up to the plate and face WBC/WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
Khan took a big risk when he moved up by eight pounds, to 155, to face Canelo for the WBC middleweight belt in May at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He was able to use his speed and boxing skills to snatch away the early rounds, but then Canelo clipped him out cold in the sixth with a huge right hand counter.
"When he caught me it was a right hand that would have knocked anyone out. But beforehand I wasn’t really feeling his shots,” said Khan to 7Days.
Khan is a little upset with Canelo. He says the Mexican fighter is not taking big risks in his career. The winner of Canelo vs. Khan was ordered to fight Golovkin in a mandatory fight. Instead of going forward with Golovkin, Canelo decided to vacate the WBC title and moved down to 154-pounds to challenge Liam Smith on September 17th at the AT&T Stadium in Texas.
Canelo has claimed, numerous times, that he's physically smaller than Golovkin and not ready - just yet - to make the full jump to 160-pounds. Khan disputes Canelo's position. He says Canelo rehydrated to 187-pounds when they fought in May.
Khan's number sounds a bit too high. It would mean Canelo rehydrated by 32-pounds from the time of the weighin. Canelo is well known to pack on the pounds following a weigh-in and he does rehdyrate by 20-pounds or more.
However, Freddie Roach - who trains Miguel Cotto - also claimed that Canelo rehydrated to over 180-pounds when he faced them last November.
“He’s a very good fighter, I’m just upset he isn’t taking a chance and a big fight. He is only fighting smaller guys," Khan said. “He needs to take a risk as I did and fight GGG,” Khan said.
“When he fought me he came into the ring at 187-pounds. I was only 158lbs. Canelo says he isn’t the same weight as Golovkin, but what is he talking about! He’s almost as big as a light heavyweight.”
