Amir Khan once again set his sights on a fight with pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather after claiming a unanimous points win over battling American Chris Algieri in New York on Friday night.
Khan came into the welterweight bout at the Barclays Center as a heavy favorite but was made to work hard against Algieri before being handed the decision 117-111 by two of the judges with the third scoring it 115-113.
Mayweather has stated he will fight only once more in September and Khan, who thought he had a bout with the American lined up last year, reiterated his desire to take on the undefeated WBA and WBC champion.
“ I really still believe that styles make fights, and Floyd has that style that would suit me, so let’s just see. I’m going to give it a week or two. My lawyer and my team, I'm going to speak to them and take a nice little break," Khan said.
“I think with the last three, four fights at 147 that’s what he Floyd wanted to see. Floyd said ‘Amir, look, prove yourself at 147, have some fights at 147 then we see if we can get the fight or not.’ I think I proved myself. Who else is out there for Floyd? I think we have answered all the questions, and people want to see something different in a fight with Floyd. Manny Pacquiao didn't show what we thought he was gonna show, but I know exactly what to do against Floyd. He's a very technical fighter and I've said for a long, long time that a style like that would suit me.”
