At Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, Kevin Mitchell (30-0, 22KOs) moved up in weight to win a twelve round unanimous decision over Breidis Prescott (21-2, 18KOs) to capture the WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title. The fight was also a WBO lightweight eliminator, with scores of 119-110, 118-111 and 117-111 for Mitchell.

After two slow rounds, Prescott started to let his hands go in the third round. Mitchell stayed on the back foot and picked his spots. Prescott tried to bully Mitchell in the fourth by pinning him against the ropes and landed combinations. Mitchell was able to get away and use his quicker hands to land the crisper punches from the distance. Mitchell was using his fast hands to continue to land his left hook in the fifth. Prescott was walking through the punches, moving forward and trying to land something big. A cut opened up around Prescott's left eye during the fifth round action. Prescott landed some good punches at the end of the fith and Mitchell fired right back.

Mitchell started to come forward in the sixth and actually backed up Prescott near the end of the round to land combinations. Prescott started to take more chances in the seventh. He went forward throwing wild punches with little defense for any counters. Mitchell started landing some good combinations as he moved forward and caught Prescott against the ropes in the eight. Mitchell continued to move and outbox Prescott during most of the ninth round action.

They stood close in the eleventh round. Mitchell was landing well and making Prescott miss his counters. Prescott was not able to land many big punches. Prescott started to do better in the eleventh. He was moving forward and landing some good shots when Mitchell was open. In the final thirty seconds, Mitchell was able to outhustle Prescott on the inside. In the twelfth and final round, Mitchell was sticking and moving. He continued to land that left hand in open spot. Throughout the entire fight, Prescott was not able to solve the puzzle of blocking Mitchell's left. Mitchell began to play to the crowd in the final twenty seconds and fought Prescott in close spots.
