BoxingScene.com reached out to welterweight and junior middleweight contender Kermit Cintron to get his thoughts on a potential December showdown with WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. BoxingScene's Rick Reeno recently reported that Cintron was in the running to face Cotto as part of a potential doubleheader that would also feature Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. squaring off with Pawel Wolak.
The former champion is skeptical that the fight will happen but is definitely interested in the all-Puerto Rican Showdown. Cintron told BoxingScene - "I will believe it when it is all signed. It's a great opportunity and a great fight for people to watch featuring two of the best fighter from Puerto Rico."
Cintron said that he has wanted the fight for years. He thinks it should have already happened but it's better late than never to make it happen.
"It's a fight that should have happened a couple years back when we were both champions at welterweight. It's a fight that I wanted for a long time and hope that it comes to fruition."
Cintron says that he respects Cotto and is a fan of his. He thinks the fight makes sense for the fans and also from a business standpoint. Cintron stressed - "this is nothing personal against Cotto." Cintron went on to say - "I have been a big fan of his since early in his career but this is a business. I hope the fight come through. This would be a great fight to end the year."
