Sheffield’s Kell Brook is leaving no stone unturned as he heads up to 160lbs from 147 in a bid to take Gennady Golovkin’s WBC, IBF and IBO titles. Brook held the IBF title down at light-welterweight and plans to skip 154 entirely to take on the challenge of his boxing life against the consensus number one in the division.
To that end, the 30-year-old has enlisted the help of Sheffield Hallam University in order to ensure that he does the weight properly, scientifically and bang on the money, as well as making sure that he is in peak physical form come the first bell.
Hallams Centre for Sport and Exercise Science helped Brook prepare for his win over Shawn Porter in August 2014; they are now putting him through his paces for Golovkin match.
“These tests allow us to assess what needs to be done when we get to camp,” stated Alan Ruddock, Sheffield Hallam's lecturer in exercise physiology.
“It allows us to see what areas we need to work on and how we can structure his training sessions and the exercises he does. We will be performing tests that will isolate specific components of the way his body uses energy to analyse and evaluate his strengths and weaknesses.”
Brook meets Golovkin at London’s O2 Arena on September 10, Sky Sports Box Office will televise here in the U.K. With many expecting a big win for Golovkin, Brook knows he has to upset the odds to achieve his two-weight title dream.
“I've worked with these guys before and we've achieved some great results,” he said when discussing his scientific approach to the move to middleweight. “They've got everything a fighter needs here and they've got all the data on me so they know where I need to be”
