IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook is hoping Amir Khan is able to pull off an upset on May 7th, when he moves up by eight pounds to challenge WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez at a catch-weight of 155-pounds.
The fight takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Brook had hoped to face Khan in the summer and the two sides were in talks. He was caught by surprise when Khan announced that he was facing Canelo instead.
Brook returned this past Saturday night and stopped mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier in two easy rounds at the Sheffield Arena.
He expects Khan to return to the welterweight division, but the Bolton boxer's trainer Virgil Hunter does not believe his fighter is going to be a welterweight again.
“I’ve heard him say he has unfinished business with the welterweights,” said Brook to The Mirror. “And I think he will move back down and mix it with us. I don’t think it’s over with me and Khan.
A fight between Khan and Brook is one of the biggest in the UK. Brook is hoping Khan is able to pull it off to make their own fight even bigger.
“Me and Khan get talked about a lot because we’re both from Britain and because of our history and the bad blood between us. But if me and Khan didn’t happen, it’s not the end of the world. There are other big names, other champions with belts. Me fighting the other guys in the division is just as exciting and there are other fights out there.”
“I don’t want to see him get hurt,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to see any Brit going abroad to another country getting hurt. I’ll be supporting him that night, all the way. He is representing our country so I wish him all the best in the fight. Plus I want him to win so that it keeps the possibility of our fight alive!”
