Following the post-fight press conference for Sergio Martinez’s twelve-round triumph over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, I ran across Mexico City legend Juan Manuel Marquez.
Martinez fought a brilliant battle against Chavez, as his speed and movement befuddled the young former champion for eleven rounds before he was dropped and severely hurt by a barrage of punches in the twelfth and final round. Martinez would rise from the knockdown and come out swinging, creating for a wild atmosphere inside of the sold-out arena.
There are already talks of rematch taking place and for Marquez, it makes perfect sense.
“I think it’s a good fight, the rematch,” Marquez told me. “Because Chavez Jr. showed a lot of people he can do it. I watched the fight and I thought Martinez won nine rounds. In round twelve he got surprised from Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.”
It has recently been announced that Marquez will be facing his rival Manny Pacquiao for a fourth time on December 8th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Marquez seemed to do enough to warrant a victory over Pacquiao last November and was dismayed when he saw the judges’ award the Filipino icon with a majority-decision verdict. Having yet to officially defeat Pacquiao despite offering up three courageous efforts against him, Marquez insists he won’t have any trouble getting himself motivated for another crack at Manny.
“I train very hard and each fight for me is a challenge," Marquez claimed. "And now, especially for me, I train very hard because Pacquiao, he knows me and I know him."
