WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez, and WBA/IBF featherweight king Yuriorkis Gamboa, were tentatively set to face each other in a June showdown in New York on the night before the Puerto Rican Day Parade. It has been reported that the Lopez-Gamboa unification bout is on hold for at least another year as Top Rank continues to build both fighters to maximize their potential purses.
BoxingScene.com was advised by well known boxing manager Cameron Dunkin that he spoke to Top Rank about matching his fighter, unbeaten Mikey Garcia, against Juan Manuel Lopez in 2011.
"I spoke to Bob (Arum) about it and he liked the idea. Mikey fought tonight. I can get him back in the ring in March when Juanma fights again. Then we can get Mikey another fight maybe around the time Juanma fights in June," Dunkin told BoxingScene.com.
Dunkin is targeting September for the potential Lopez-Garcia clash.
"We can do Mikey with Juanma in September in Vegas. Juanma seems to be willing to fight anywhere. You would have a Puerto Rican and a Mexican (American) fighting. We could build it into a big fight," Dunkin said.
