IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey plans to bring the fight to Miguel Cotto when the two boxers meet on June 13 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Clottey wants to become the first Ghanaian boxer to unify two major world titles by winning Cotto's WBO version on the welterweight title.
Clottey had previously contacted BoxingScene.com to advise the readers of Top Rank's decision to place him in the fight with Cotto. He says everything is agreed upon by both sides and contracts are going to be signed this week.
“I want to be the first Ghanaian to unify two titles at the same time and I will go all out to achieve this for myself, my family and the entire nation. This is an opportunity I can’t miss, because none of the boxers in my rank want to fight me. So I have to take up the challenge to keep me in shape and also see my dreams materialize,” Clottey told GNA Sports .
Clottey will leave for the United States in a few weeks to begin a tough six week training camp. If everything goes well against Cotto, he plans to target WBA champion Shane Mosley in a year-end closer.
