At the Palenque del FEX in Mexicali, Mexico, former champion Jose Luis Castillo (58-9-1, 49 KOs) made his return to the ring in the welterweight division and stopped James Wayca (16-8, 7 KOs) in two rounds after landing some of his usual damage to the body.
Castillo, 35, plans to continue his career to make one final run at the gold. At 5'8 and having a reach of 69-inches, he is smaller than current WBC champion Andre Berto, who is considered a small welterweight. Last July, Castillo was unable to overpower or hurt Sebastian Andres Lujan, an average welterweight. Lujan simply won with his size advantage and the ability to take anything that Castillo threw his way. He was also able to outwork Castillo, who usually outworked his opponents.
The odds are stacked against Castillo. Weight problems over the years have broken his body down. Money issues have forced him to continue fighting.
