In the late summer of 2016, undefeated welterweight Jose Benavides was shot in the leg by an unknown assailant while walking his dog in in Arizona. The severity of the injuries sustained to his leg left doubt on his professional career.
On Monday morning, Jose Benavides Sr. told BoxingScene.com:
"He's doing really well, thank God. I just got him an L.A. Fitness membership. He's starting to do some exercises over there, using the elliptical , the bike and swimming. Maybe in about two weeks he should be starting here and we'll evaluate how he's doing and we'll start from there."
Benavides Sr. was at the Rock in Carson, California, where his other son, David, was getting in some sparring. It's not clear if Jose (25-0, 16 KO's) - who last fought on July 23rd when he decisioned Francisco Santana on the Terence Crawford vs. Viktor Postol undercard in Las Vegas - will ever box again. But he is back on his feet and functioning.
"He's walking, he's running," said Benavides Sr.
"When he comes here. I'll just have to evaluate where he's at. But I'm thinking five or six months if everything's well. Like I said, we've got to see how he's doing and we'll take it from there."
