Paul "Silky" Jones worked Tyson Fury's corner for the first time this past Saturday when Fury defeated Martin Rogan via a 5th round knockout with a bodyshot. The former WBO junior middleweight champion assisted head trainer Peter Fury and assessed Fury's performance for BoxingScene.com.
"Tyson boxed under orders and stuck to the game plan. He was real clinical and disciplined. In the 2nd round he told his uncle Peter 'I can take him' but he was told not to step it up," said Jones.
Jones said that continiued improvement will be seen in Fury now that he improved his diet and training regimen.
"Just like his uncle Peter Fury said in the press conference, (prior to training for this fight) Tyson was training in a shed and eating bags of Crisps and was able to get to British and Commonwealth standards. Imagine what will he be like now that he's living and training the right way?" Jones continued.
Rogan was caught off guard when Fury switched to a southpaw stance. After the fight he said that he wasn't prepared to deal with a left-handed version of Fury and claimed that Fury was trying to protect his chin. Jones told BoxingScene that the plan all along was for Fury to fight as a lefty but that they had kept the plan under wraps.
"The plan for weeks was to go lefty and no one apart from Team Fury new this," Jones revealed.
