It's been reported that WBO cruiserweight champion 39-year-old Johnny Nelson has announced his retirement after being forced to pull out of his October 14 defense against rival Enzo Maccarinelli due to an injury.

Nelson has been battling with injuries for the last couple of years, and his retirement leaves 'interim champion' Maccarinelli to take the belt by default. Maccarinelli will now face Mark Hobson in a rematch of their March contest that had rave reviews. The bout will serve as chief support to super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe's defense against Sakio Bika.

"The injuries that I have acquired through training for fights over the past years just will not let me step up to the next level in preparation for my next fight. So I've decided to say that's it, I'll call it a day. Out with the old, in with the new," Nelson said.
