It appears that British Lightweight Champion John Murray's journey to European glory has now taken an unexpected detour.
According to the Fayetteville Observer. ‘Undefeated British lightweight John Murray will take on European Lightweight Champion Anthony Mezaache of France over 12 rounds at the Crown on Friday, March 19. The bout will be screened nationwide on the Showtime cable TV network.’
It carries on to explain why this is the case. ‘Rarely has a European title been contested beyond the continent's boundaries. The Murray-Mezaache bout was originally set for Murray's home city of Manchester, but an unspecified conflict arose with the venue. The Crown was already negotiating with the promotional company behind the fight card for another event, and was lined up to host because the date was available and because the show could just as easily be televised in England from here as from anywhere else.’
At least there seems to be the promise that it can be televised for UK fans, although with Hennessy Sports not having a TV deal, it is at the minute unknown whether this will land on British screens. However, it remains to be the case that it's great exposure for the winner Stateside, and could potentially open the door for a big fight against an American down the line.
