It appears undisputed super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe is actually considering a defense of his crown. For weeks, Calzaghe and promoter Frank Warren have been locked in negotiations with Golden Boy Promotions for a bout at light heavyweight with Bernard Hopkins. Golden Boy presented an offer, which Calzaghe turned down, because the amount of money was lower than what he made for Mikkel Kessler on November 3.

Hopkins is probably not going to be ready to fight again until the middle of next year and Calzaghe refuses to wait that long to fight again. While waiting out a Hopkins bout, Calzaghe told BBC Wales Sport that he may very well stay at super middleweight for his next fight, and keep busy by defending his titles against someone like Winky Wright.

"Hopkins looks like he's not going to be ready until June or July and I'm not going to wait for six months," Calzaghe said. "I want to keep busy and if 2008 is going to be my last year, I want to be boxing in March, maybe April at the latest. Hopefully it will be at light heavyweight but or if I get a big fight at super middleweight against somebody like Winky Wright."
