BoxingScene.com has received confirmation that lightweight contender Joan Guzman (29-0, 17KOs) has finally been freed from the administrative suspension that was given to him by the Mississippi commission. Guzman was placed on that suspension when he failed to make weight for last September's title bout with Nate Campbell. Not making weight was only part of the issue. Campbell was still willing to fight him above the contracted weight. A doctor told the commission that Guzman seemed well enough to fight, but Guzman said that he felt too ill and refused to move forward. As a result the Mississippi commission placed him on an administrative suspension for refusing to fight.
The administrative suspension cost Guzman a shot at the vacant IBF lightweight title against Yuri Romanov (21-2, 14KOs). He was picked by the sanctioning body but later dropped when the IBF learned about the suspension.
According to my friends at Fight Fax, the suspension was officially lifted on March 14.
