Jim Lampley, the long-time voice of HBO Boxing, will make his return to ringside commentary after a six-year break.

Lampley announced on Sunday that he will be on the call for the May 2 Ring Magazine card in New York’s Time Square for the outdoor tripleheader featuring Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero, Devin Haney vs. Jose Ramirez and Teofimo Lopez vs. Arnold Barboza.

“I’m here to announce that after a few years away from ringside, I will be returning on May 2 under the banner of The Ring magazine to cover the tripleheader in Times Square,” said Lampley in a video on the social media network formerly known as Twitter.

Lampley calls the fight card, which will be formally announced on Tuesday at a press conference in Times Square, a “groundbreaking event for the sport,” adding that he “couldn’t be more excited.”

The 75-year-old Lampley, a 2015 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, was the main voice for HBO Boxing from 1988 until 2018, when HBO exited the boxing business after their December 8 broadcast. Among the legendary fights Lampley provided color for were George Foreman’s historic KO of Michael Moorer in 1994, all three Arturo Gatti-Mickey Ward fights, plus Buster Douglas’ upset knockout of Mike Tyson in 1990.

Since then, the four-time Sports Emmy Award winner has been working the live chat for PPV.com boxing broadcasts, including during Saturday’s Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach boxing event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The return to ringside coincides with the planned release of Lampley’s upcoming book on his 50-year career in sports television entitled “It Happened! A Uniquely Lucky Life in Sports Television.” The memoir is scheduled to be released on April 15.
