At the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada, super middleweight Jesse Brinkley (35-5, 22KOs) won a very exciting twelve round decision over Curtis Stevens (21-3, 15KOs). The scores were 117-109, 118-108 and 119-107. Brinkley became the IBF's number two contender to champion Lucian Bute.

Brinkley came out with his jab. Stevens started to throw hard combinations to push Brinkley back. Steven was able to get off with two hard left hands. Brinkley continued to use his jab to create some space. Brinkley threw a combo to the body. The right eye was badly swelling on Brinkley's face by the final minute of the round. In the second, Brinkley came out throwing a few power punches that were all blocked. Brinkley was able to land to the body. Brinkley kept the action close, trading shots with Stevens.

Brinkley was able to get back in the game in the third and fourth round by outworking Stevens during exchanges and keeping the jab in Stevens' face. During the the fifth, Brinkley continued his rally. He pinned Stevens against the ropes and landed a hard combination. The stood trading at close range at the end of the fifth round. They traded even after the bell, forcing the trainers to jump in to break the fighters apart. Brinkley's left eye began to swell.

Stevens started strong in the sixth round with left hands. Brinklye came back with two hard right hands to get Stevens in trouble. Brinkley began to follow him around and started landing hard shots to the head and body. A combination put Stevens down for the count of eight to end the round very strong. Brinkley was stalking at the start of the seventh. Stevens tried to press forward with a combination. Brinkley continued to use the jab to set up his shots. They started to trade shots with Brinkley landing better.

Brinkley continued to trade punches with Stevens during the eight. Both of them were stunned during moments in the exchanges. Brinkley outworked Stevens in the ninth and tenth rounds. Stevens was not able to get enough punches in the rounds and appeared to be getting tired. Near the end of the round, they traded hard shots once again. At the start of the twelfth, they were trading once again with hard punches from close range. Brinkley got Stevens in trouble in the final thirty seconds and scored a techincal knockdown when Stevens fell back and was held up by the ropes. Brinkley tried to finish him off but ran out of time. Both of Stevens' eyes were closing by the end of the fight.

The television opener saw welterweight prospect Raymond Serrano (12-0, 6KOs) won an eight round decision over Ronnie Warrior Jr. (12-4, 3KOs). The scores were 79-73 on all three cards.
