Making 135 pounds has been incredibly difficult for Jamaine Ortiz. Normally, once it gets closer to fight week, his face is sunken in, his rib cage is protruding from his skin, and the muscles he usually has are simply gone.

It hasn’t been easy, but Ortiz plans on sticking around a bit longer. At least until he wins a world title. At the moment, the lightweight division is hot, but none of the top names are jumping into the ring anytime soon.

So, with everything at a standstill, Ortiz (17-1-1, 8 KOs) plans on pulling out his binoculars and watching what happens at 140 pounds this weekend.

At the Chase Center in San Francisco, Devin Haney will make his super lightweight debut when he takes on current WBC champ, Regis Prograis.

During the buildup, Haney had a lot to say. Prograis, despite the audacious threats, smiled while saying, “I’m a hurt you.” According to Ortiz, however, Prograis is showing off fake bravado. Once the final bell rings, he expects Prograis' face to be black and blue while Haney drapes his world title over his shoulders.

“I think Devin is gonna sweep him up,” said Ortiz to MillCity Boxing. “I think he’ll be able to pick him apart. I think Regis is too slow, too flat-footed.”

For three years, Prograis (29-1, 24 KOs) roamed around in boxing’s version of purgatory. He was stripped of his world title by Josh Taylor in 2019 and was forced to prove himself against opponents you rarely heard of.

Prograis, 34, took it all on the chin while simultaneously making a bloody mess of practically everyone he faced. Impressive wins aside, Ortiz isn’t sanguine that he gets the job done in the next few hours.

There’s a bright side to Prograis taking another loss. The soon-to-be-former champion, according to Ortiz, won’t have to look far for another big-time opportunity.

“Yeah,” continued Ortiz when asked if he would be willing to face Prograis next. “I’ll win. However Devin makes him look, I’ll make him look worse.”
