MIAMI BEACH, Florida – Logan Paul fully understands that he’ll take quite a steep step up in competition Sunday night.
His younger brother, however, doesn’t anticipate his upcoming Showtime Pay-Per-View bout being anywhere near as difficult. There is a world of difference, of course, between battling one of the best boxers in this sport’s storied history, even in an exhibition, and facing a fading former UFC champion who doesn’t have a boxing background.
Jake Paul didn’t predict another first-round knockout, yet he is sure he’ll have his way with Tyron Woodley. Jake Paul and Woodley will meet on an undetermined date in August, when Jake Paul will participate in his fourth professional boxing match.
“He’s a good striker,” Jake Paul said Thursday during a press event at the famed 5th Street Gym. “He’s known for knocking people out. But I think when I beat Tyron, people have to put respect on my name. But that’s not what I’m here for to be honest. I already know how good I am. I know that this is going to be another easy fight. That’s why Showtime is in business with me. You’re looking at the future of boxing.”
Paul’s prediction is sure to draw the ire of hardcore fight fans that don’t view him or his older brother as legitimate boxers. The 39-year-old Woodley wants nothing more than to silence the polarizing, popular Paul, but his trash-talking opponent doesn’t seem the least bit concerned about boxing a former UFC welterweight champion who lost each of his last four mixed martial arts matches.
“He’s not as good as me and he’s playing catch-up,” Paul said following an unusually long, intense stare down. “We see holes in his whole entire game, and he has to try to learn how to box. He’s stiff. Muscles don’t fight and he’s going to be out of his element. This is boxing. This isn’t MMA. You can’t learn how to box in this amount of time. Now we’re going to show him the reins. The Disney kid is going to beat up the five-time UFC champion of the world. It’s going to be hilarious.”
Woodley was a two-time All-America wrestler for the University of Missouri before beginning his MMA career in 2009.
The Ferguson, Missouri, native has gone 19-7-1, including seven knockouts. In Woodley’s most recent MMA action, Vicente Luque made him submit in the first round at UFC 260 on March 27 in Las Vegas.
Woodley also is a close friend of Ben Askren, the former UFC fighter Paul knocked out in the first round April 17 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The 24-year-old Paul (3-0, 3 KOs), of Westlake, Ohio, is so confident he’ll handle Woodley with ease that he offered Woodley a wager he thinks Woodley shouldn’t refuse.
“I told him I’ll pay you double your purse if you beat me,” Paul said. “But if you lose, you have to pay your purse to my charity. He lacks confidence. Why wouldn’t you take that bet as a fighter if you knew you were going to win? To make double the money? This is the biggest payday of your life and you can make double? Put your money where your mouth is.”
