The showdown between light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins and WBO/WBC/WBA super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe is inching closer to a done deal as the venue is ready. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that MGM Mirage has already set aside the date of April 12 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
The Guardian reports that the attorneys for both fighters are in the process of finalizing the contracts. HBO Pay-Per-View will televise.
"Nothing can ever be definite until the contracts are signed," Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren told The Guardian . "But the paperwork is with the lawyers, and it looks as though it will be done. It is a huge fight for both men, and it would give Joe the big American date he has been looking for."
Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, told the Review-Journal a deal is coming in the next few days.
"I'm comfortable we'll get it done in the next few days," Schaefer said. "This is my first time working with Frank, so it's taken a little longer than when I negotiate with (Top Rank president) Bob Arum."
