Former undisputed cruiserweight and heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield is a big fan of current WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) of Guadalajara, Mexico.
After the retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September, and the potentially retirement of Manny Pacquiao following his upcoming fight in April, many view Canelo as the next superstar to take over the sport.
Canelo will return to the ring on May 7th, when he defend his title against Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Beside being a superstar, Holyfield views Canelo as the next fighter to lead Mexican boxing.
"There is no doubt that Canelo is one of the biggest stars in boxing worldwide, and he might the be the idol of Mexican boxing that had been absent for a lot of years," Holyfield told Carlos Zoolbaran. "He has a very long career ahead. Thousands of Mexicans follow him and in the United States they also follow him."
Khan is moving up to a catch-weight of 155-pounds for the fight with Canelo. Some view it as a mismatch on a physical level, but Holyfield - who moved from crusier to fight some of the biggest heavyweights in the world - disagrees.
"Although Khan has to gain some weight to face Saul, and people are saying that it's an uneven fight, I think we will see a great fight because of the speed of Khan, who also throws good punches - and because Alvarez also has a great punch ," Holyfield said.
