Facing Gervonta Davis comes with several arduous and frightening factors. For starters, considering his star power, fighters who take on the Baltimore native are forced to deal with the magnitude of his awe-inspiring events. Secondly, and seemingly more importantly, Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) has a penchant for the dramatics. With the 28-year-old sporting a knockout percentage north of 92%, his foes are often left unresponsive on the canvas.
Come January 7th, in front of what's expected to be a jam-packed crowd at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C., Davis will attempt to separate Hector Luis Garcia from his consciousness.
On most occasions, in an effort to escape from his deleterious blows, opponents of Davis have opted to box and move. However, while Garcia is well aware that Davis has the sort of mind-numbing power that can turn out the lights of just about anyone, he recently revealed that he’ll do whatever’s necessary in order to win, including fighting fire with fire.
“I don’t think I have to be careful,” said Garcia to FightHype.com when asked if he’ll box a bit more than usual. “I do have my plans as far as how I’m going to fight. At times I’m going to fight at distance if that's what's required and at times I’ll fight inside if that’s what’s required.”
Garcia, born and bred in the Dominican Republic, is easily coming off the best year of his relatively young career. To kick off his 2022 campaign, Garcia (16-0, 10 KOs) sauntered to the ring as a sizable underdog against Chris Colbert. Yet, despite being a late replacement, Garcia made it look relatively easy against the normally slick-hitting contender at 130 pounds.
For an encore, Garcia parlayed that victory into a title fight against Roger Gutierrez. Much like his showdown against Colbert, Garcia cruised to the finish line, nabbing the WBA super featherweight crown in the process.
Although his bout against Davis will take place at 135-pounds, Garcia doesn't appear unnerved over the task at hand. In fact, even with the majority of the boxing world giving Davis the edge, Garcia believes that come January 7th, he’ll shock the world.
“I have a lot of advantages that people may not realize and those advantages will show up in the ring.”
