Former super middleweight champion Carl Froch, who retired earlier this year, could be tempted to come out of retirement for a fight with IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), according to Froch's promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.
The fight was being negotiated a few months ago. Before a deal could get reached, Froch announced his retirement.
The Nottingham fighter has been inactive since the May 2014 knockout win over George Groves before a crowd of 80,000 fans at Wembley.
There has been some talk of a possible fight with his domestic rival, IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale - but Hearn doubts that fight will happen.
Froch made a fortune in the rematch with Groves and Hearn does not consider a fight with DeGale as being lucrative enough to motivate Froch.
Golovkin and his team have already accepted the scenario of giving Froch the home field advantage by traveling over to the UK.
"Everyone asks if a 2016 comeback is on and I know the competitor in him would like a fight with James DeGale. But I cannot see that happening," Hearn told Daily Mail.
"Knowing how much he was paid to fight George Groves in his last fight a year and a half ago, I know it would have to be seriously worth his while. I believe the only fight that would get him back would be Gennady Golovkin."
Froch continues to stay in shape. Hearn says his fighter has added on some muscle, which may make it more difficult to get down to the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds.
"It is the fight the world would want to see. Froch is in great shape at the moment. He has added muscle mass to his frame, which would make getting to 168lbs (the super-middleweight limit) harder," Hearn said.
"But I can never rule out a comeback for Carl. If he is to come back it has to be in 2016 – he can't leave it any later. But until then, who knows? I can't say it will happen but at the same time I wouldn't rule it out.'
