New York - HBO at the moment has three of boxing’s biggest stars campaigning at or around the same weight class. Miguel Cotto is the lineal middleweight champion, but many recognize Gennady "GGG" Golovkin as the best fighter in the very same division. Then there’s the popular young Mexican in Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who had his last three fights at 155-pounds, which is technically the middleweight division. All three fighters draw at the box office and draw on television.

Though it seems that Cotto and Alvarez will fight in the fall, there is a lot of skepticism on either fighting Golovkin - who is currently sitting as the mandatory challenger to Cotto’s WBC title.

According to HBO’s Vice President of Programming, Peter Nelson, the plan is to mix and match all three.

“Hopefully it plays out well and these bright lights in the sport collide,” Nelson told BoxingScene.com. “These three fighters can be mixed and matched and be phenomenal in the sport. They all have great knockout power. They all seem to be in the rejuvenated part of their careers or in their primes and what we want to see is these fights come together because that’s what the fans want. I believe these fighters fight for their legacy as much as the money and their careers. Luckily these fights are lucrative so they are easier to come together.”

Logically speaking, Cotto-Canelo should be next but that was the sentiment earlier this year before negotiations ended and both men moved on. Everything can point to Cotto-Canelo but who knows?

“Signs point to where they point,” explained Nelson. “Miguel Cotto just fought and he’ll evaluate his career once he takes time with his family. It looks to be a tremendous fight (Cotto-Canelo) if it comes together if that’s what’s next on tap.”

So how about Golovkin? Nelson admits that it’s not easy finding people to get in the ring with him even if Triple G is in search of the best fights.

“He always wants to fight the top level competition as we scour the world to try and find that opportunity,” stated Nelson.

“It’s more about who’s willing to get in the ring with Gennady Golovkin and its not always easy. Luckily he has a great team around him in Tom Loeffler and Abel Sanchez and working with them to try to find those fights has been a pleasure and watching him grow on our network. He was 30 years old when he got the opportunity to fight on our platform and he’s making the most of it. He’s there not only to win but not entertain.”
