WBA heavyweight champion David Haye expects a unification with WBO/IBF/IBO champ Wladimir Klitschko to happen in the near future. Haye told Kevin Mitchell of The Guardian that Klitschko doesn't have a legacy and needs the fight in order to cement it. He expects the fight to happen at some point in the first half of 2011.
"Fingers crossed, we'll know something pretty soon. From our side, we're raring to go. I'm positive the fight will happen. As I've said before, I will retire next year, so this fight has to happen. It's a fight the world wants. It's the only fight the Klitschkos can have to cement their legacy," Haye said.
"Wladimir has got no legacy. His brother [Vitali, who holds the WBC belt] can at least say he fought Lennox Lewis. And Wladimir hasn't had even one of those fights. The only opponent he can fight for his legacy is me."
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told BoxingScene.com several days ago that he wants to place Klitschko-Haye in a Las Vegas venue. After watching Amir Khan's fight against Marcos Maidana on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay, Haye is on board with bringing the fight to Las Vegas.
"Watching Amir here tonight definitely gave me a real buzz," Haye said. "I want some of this. I'd love to come out here and fight in a great arena and give everyone value for money. The talks have been very positive. I'm confident it's going to happen. If Wladimir is as confident as I am, then it will happen."
