Chris Meyer, Managing Director for Sauerland Event, confirmed to BoxingScene.com that a fight with Audley Harrison is one possible scenario for WBA heavyweight champion David Haye - if a deal is not reached with WBO/IBO/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. The Klitschko-Haye negotiations are still ongoing, but both sides are also exploring other possible options.
"What we did last week is worked on certain scenarios, including a possible Klitschko fight, and certain other fighters," Meyer said to BoxingScene.com.
Haye vs. Harrison would become a big event in the UK. Harrison, an Olympic gold medal winner in the 2000 games, has built a nice little run in the last twelve months. He dominated the competition to win last year's Prizefighter tournament, and in April he scored a brutal twelfth round knockout over Michael Sprott to win the vacant EBU heavyweight title.
Haye vs. Harrison would mark the first time in 13-years where two British heavyweights could fight for a major world title.
"I take nothing away from Harrison. I think he developed well and an all-British title fight would be very interesting. When was the last time that both [fighters] were British and fought for a world heavyweight title? In 1997, Lennox Lewis vs. Henry Akinwande. Akinwande was from Nigeria but he had a British passport," Meyer said.
