On July 28th, Robert Guerrero (29-1) will dive into uncharted waters when he faces Selcuk Aydin (23-0) for the interim WBC welterweight title. Guerrero will be making the jump from the lightweight division which is a 12 pound difference.
"Not many people realize that this is my 6th weight class. I started my career at 122," Guerrero would tell us on BoxingScene.com's official audio show, The Boxing Lab. "This will be my sixth world title in four different weight divisions. There are only two other fighters that I can think of that fought in six weight divisions and that is Oscar de la Hoya and Manny Pacquiao."
According to Guerrero, the main reason he is moving up in weight is because he can't get a big fight in the lightweight or junior welterweight division. Besides campaigning for a fight against Floyd Mayweather, Guerrero has called out the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, Amir Khan, Erik Morales and others.
"I am tired of chasing these champions at 35 and 40. You mention my name to Khan, he changes the subject. You mention my name to Marquez, he flat out says no. None of these guys would fight me so I said why not just go up and get a belt?" Guerrero explained. He feels that he will have a better shot at a a big fight by grabbing a piece of the welterweight title.
