In the second part of his interview with BoxingScene.com, former champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero discusses the shoulder injury that forced him to withdraw from a scheduled fight with Marcos Maidana, the personal hardships of preparing for fights while his wife Casey was battling cancer, and much more.
BoxingScene.com: Robert, how disappointed where you about the injury before the Maidana fight?
I was very disappointed. I worked very hard for that fight in Big Bear with my team. I had great sparring, conditioning and nutrition. There's no doubt in my mind that I was going beat Maidana impressively, but in this sport injuries happen, and you got to be able to bounce back. I don't need any tune-ups or any soft touches. I’ve been fighting with a injured shoulder my entire career and it just got to the point I couldn’t bear it anymore. Now that it’s fixed, this is the best my shoulder has ever felt in my life. I’ll be 100% ready in March and willing to fight Mayweather, Khan, Madiana or any top level fighter.
BoxingScene.com: Do you feel like Maidana's style was tailor-made for you?
No doubt about it. Look what happened to Katsidis who is a very tough guy. He had both Marquez and Casamayor down in those fights and he lost a split decision to Juan Diaz. I shut him out every round 12-0. I feel that Maidana was a replica type fight but was only gonna be stronger at 140lbs. I'd love to fight Amir Khan after he fights Peterson but I really believe in May, I’m going to beat Floyd Mayweather and become pound for pound champion. Once that happens, then Maidana will have the first opportunity to fight me because he’s the only one brave enough to step up. Now that's a tailor-made plan. I have to give Maidana credit for taking the fight though. At least he has the balls to step in the ring with me. Juan Marquez ducked me for two years.
BoxingScene.com: That sounds like a great plan. How does a Guerrero vs. Khan fight play out?
I would destroy him. I would slice through him like a knife on hot butter. He's chinless and heartless. He's a fraud. Prescott knocked him dead and the ref in the Maidana fight saved him. He fights handpicked opponents. He had two choices for his July fight, me or Judah, and we all know who he picked. But it’s simple, we are both promoted by Golden Boy, let's rumble and let's get it on. I'll let my Reyes Gloves do the talking.
BoxingScene.com: How difficult was it to prepare for fights while your wife (Casey) was going through cancer?
Words can't explain what I was going through mentally and physically. I was sleeping on the hospital floors, not eating good, not getting sleep and worst of all, looking at my beautiful wife suffer was the hardest part. It wasn’t fun working construction to help pay medical bills, while prize fighting and trying to make ends meet either. We have two wonderful kids which was also hard. But I thank the Good Lord all mighty that my family’s blessed and Casey is doing great. Now and I can focus strictly on boxing.
BoxingScene.com: How do you stay focused and what is the driving force in boxing being that you've won five different titles in three different weight classes? You’ve beaten everyone you have fought. What more do you have to accomplish?
That was the start of my career, now I'm in the prime of my career. My goal is to win titles in three more weight classes. I feel that by the end of my career, I will have won titles in six different weight classes. Not many fighters can say that and I feel that is a huge accomplishment. Most importantly I want to fight the best champions in every division. Like I said, I was Juan Manuel Marquez’s mandatory for over two years and never got the fight! But hey, that's how boxing is. All I can do is continue accepting to fight the best fighters in the world. Some of these guys on the pound for pound list have never won world titles in more than one weight class; I’ve done it in three.
BoxingScene.com: Closing Thoughts?
First, I want to thank Jesus Christ for blessing me with a wonderful family, Bob Santos who is one of the best managers in boxing, and my father and trainer for always pushing me. Last, to Amir Khan - put up or shut up. You talk tough and I don't like it. You’re a punk for saying I took step aside money and trust me you don't want to rumble with Team Guerrero, we’re ready to go anytime, anywhere. 2012 let's do it. Guerrero vs. Khan in Bolton, Pakistan or on your front lawn!
