Abel Sanchez, trainer of WBC/WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) believes Saul 'Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs) had no intention of facing his boxer, at least not in 2016.

Earlier this year, the World Boxing Council ordered Canelo to make a mandatory defense of his title against Golovkin.

The two boxers were allowed to take part in an interim-bout. Golovkin knocked out Dominic Wade in two rounds, while Canelo blasted out Amir Khan in six.

The two sides had until May 24th to reach a deal or a purse bid would take place in Mexico City. Last week, Canelo made a decision to vacate the WBC world title and then the sanctioning body named Golovkin as their beltholder at middleweight.

While the two sides continue to talk, Sanchez believes the fight is more likely to take place in 2017.

In the opinion of Sanchez, a lot of the Mexican fans are upset with Canelo's decision, because he vocally challenged Golovkin on more than one occasion.

"Alvarez gave his word as a man to the World Boxing Council that he would do the fight with Triple G, but instead vacated the middleweight championship. He challenged us after the fight with Miguel Cotto and after beating Amir Khan - but Canelo had no intention of doing this fight, at least not this year," said Sanchez to Carlos Zalbaran

"Saul wants to have more control and does not want to be forced into the fight. I don't think he's afraid, but he's disappointed the Mexican fans who are used to seeing great warriors who do not care who they face, they just want to get in there and fight."
