Gennadiy Golovkin has spent much of his 14-year pro career known as a no-nonsense fighter.

While there still remains plenty more to accomplish in his view, there exists the possibility of having a little bit of fun perhaps down the road.

Kazakhstan’s Golovkin isn’t quite as dismissive as other boxing purists on the recent trend of YouTube boxing events and legends coming out of retirement for exhibition matches. In the past 13 months, boxing has been subject to three fights involving YouTube personalities as well as the celebrated Legends Only League launch with Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. in an eight-round exhibition match this past November.

Next up on the tour is retired five-division champ and pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. The recently elected Hall of Famer will face online celebrity and boxing novice Logan Paul next February on Fanmio Pay-Per-View.

All such contests have proven to be widely successful commercial events, in spite of boxing purists cringing over the thought of the current trend. None of it is beneath the standards long ago established by Golovkin as among the premier middleweights of his generation.

“They are very attractive from a commercial point of view,” admitted Golovkin, who is otherwise focused on his upcoming mandatory title fight versus Poland’s Kamil Szeremeta (21-0, 5KOs).

The two will collide in the first defense of Golovkin’s second middleweight title reign this Friday at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. With a win, Golovkin (40-1-1, 35KOs) will maintain his standing as a top middleweight in a division undergoing a facelift with the potential departure of his longtime rival and reigning lineal champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

As he comes up on his 15th full year in the pros and his 39th birthday next April, it’s not unrealistic to begin thinking about a future beyond the everyday grind of the sport. Perhaps one where he, too, can be found on the sport’s latest get-quick rich circuit.

“It depends on demand for those types of fights,” notes Golovkin. “I would have to consider it, but I would be open to an opportunity like that. Nobody knows!”
