Glenn Donaire, the elder brother of IBF flyweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire failed in his bid to avenge the defeat of fellow Filipinos Rodel Mayol and Bert Batawang when he lost by a unanimous twelve round decision to IBF light flyweight champion Ulises "Archie" Solis for the title in Sonora, Mexico yesterday.
In a close and competitive fight where Donaire was the aggressor and landed the harder punches the three judges once again gave credence to the meaning of a "hometown decision" in Mexico by scoring the fight a shutout for the Mexican champion which belied what fight fans saw at the venue and on television.
With his gallant stand to create history by winning the title and joining younger brother and IBF flyweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire falling short, the elder Glenn has nothing to be ashamed of. If anything the judges should be the ones to be ashamed of themselves.
With the loss Donaire dropped to 17-4-1, 9 KO's) while Solis who inflicted TKO defeats inflicted on countrymen Rodel Mayol who lost by an eighth round TKO and Bert Batawang who lost by a ninth round TKO, last year improved to 27-1-2 with 20 knockouts.
Both fighters suffered cuts but not bad enough to get referee Pat Russell to stop the bout.
Nonito himself earlier expressed confidence that his brother would win the world title claiming that despite his TKO wins over Mayol and Batawang, Solis was not a hard puncher and was the one who wouldn’t be able to take Glenn’s best shots.
