WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez is shocked that Gennady Golovkin decided to defend his WBA/IBO/IBF/WBC middleweight titles against Kell Brook, who is a world champion at 147-pounds.
Brook (36-0, 25KOs) will move up by thirteen pounds to face Golovkin on September 10th at the O2 Arena in London.
Ramirez, who recently suffered a hand injury that knocked him off this Saturday's Crawford-Postol Pay-Per-View undercard, is hoping to get Golovkin in the ring this fall.
What doesn't make sense to Ramirez, is that Golovkin was very critical of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez deciding to fight Amir Khan this past May, which took place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds for the WBC middleweight title. Golovkin said it was nothing more than a "business match."
"Triple G was criticizing Canelo a lot for fighting a welterweight and now he's doing the same thing. It doesn't make any sense. I understand that boxing is a business, but I believe that everybody should be fighting people in their own weight divisions or close to their weight division," Ramirez said to BoxingScene.com.
Top Rank [Ramirez] and K2 Promotions [Golovkin] have discussed 2017 showdown between their two boxers. Golovkin is looking to become the undisputed middleweight champion. The sole remaining belt outside of his hands is currently held by WBO world champion Billy Joe Saunders - who is being difficult with his financial demands.
If they are unable to get Saunders in the ring by the midway point of next year, Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez admits they will begin discussing the possibility of going up to 168-pounds and Ramirez is at the top of their list for that move. Ramirez is ready to fight right now.
"I want fight Triple G whenever Triple is ready. They said they would do it next year," Ramirez said.
