World Boxing Organization (WBO) super middleweight champion Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez received the green light from his doctor. On Wednesday, Ramirez had his injured right hand evaluated and now he can fully train in the gym.

Ramirez was scheduled to fight in July, which would have been his first defense as part of the Terence Crawford vs. Viktor Postol pay-per-view in Las Vegas, but suffered a training injury to the middle knuckle of his right hand and withdrew.

Jesus Zapari, who co-promotes the boxer with Top Rank, had previously stated that Ramirez would be meeting with his doctor on October 5, and at that point they would have a better idea if the unbeaten Mexican could return in late November or December, as the fighter has already begun to physically prepare in the event that possibility is confirmed.

Ramirez met with with hand specialist Steve Shin, who said there was no problem with using the right hand to punch.

"Fortunately the doctor made his evaluation and stated that I can already hit with that hand, which is the best news I've received in a long time. Now I need to speak with Top Rank. Bob Arum is outside the country but once he returns I will sit down and talk with his company," said  Zapari to ESPN Deportes

Ramirez capture the world title back in April, after unseating longtime champion Arthur Abraham of Germany in Las Vegas.

"What we want is to see if we can fight this year, but we are not in any hurry. We know that there are not a lot of dates because we are close to the end of the year, but if there is an opportunity and Gilberto looks good - then we will try to make his first defense. So soon he will start slowly working in the gym," Zapari said.
