Zachariah Delgado/Matchroom BoxingThe BoxingScene Today talk show is back – due to public demand.
It looked last week as though it might be on hold, but former world champion Chris Algieri and top trainer Robert Garcia returned Monday.
Algieri, a die-hard New York Knicks fan, opened up talking about the NBA Finals success of his team but the discussed Garcia’s weekend cornering his sensational champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez in Phoenix, who stopped Antonio Vargas in six rounds.
It was Rodriguez’s first fight at 118lbs.
“’Bam’ felt good, felt strong,” Garcia told Algieri. “During training camp, everything was good. He was looking sharp, feeling very strong but when you have your opponent who also has a gameplan, who also has experience, the amateur experience, the speed, the height, that’s something Vargas worked on and used the first few rounds, and gave us a little bit of trouble the first three-four rounds. It wasn’t easy. But look, that’s what a real champion does. They go out, they follow the gameplan and execute it the way they do and Vargas was doing it. Vargas was a champion. He’s a legit fighter. We can’t underestimate him. On the other hand, same thing with ‘Bam.’ He was moving up in weight. He knew it wasn’t going to be easy, he was able to adjust quick and follow instructions and took care of business. That’s what a real champion does. When the fight is not that easy and getting a little difficult or awkward, you figure it out.”
Algieri and Garcia also spoke about the heavyweight division, a possible fight between Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn, the Muhammad Ali Act, Zuffa Boxing and much more.
