Tom Loeffler, promoter of WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs), is looking forward to a big 2017 for his fighter.
There are several potential options for next year that include Daniel Jacobs, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
At the moment Loeffler is still heavily involved in talks with adviser Al Haymon to finalize a deal for his boxer to face WBA mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs on March 18th in New York City. The two sides have until December 19th to reach a deal or the purse bid will go forward.
There are also discussions for Golovkin to face Canelo next September. Chavez Jr. returned with a victory this past weekend at 168-pounds.
"First we need to address the issue of the mandatory fight with Jacobs. We have to see how things go. We are trying to reach an agreement before the purse bid and after that we'll take a look at the big fights with Chavez and Canelo," said Loeffler to ESPN Deportes.
"It would be great to have all these fights. Golovkin is the number one middleweight in the world and Jacobs is number two. We will go step by step, Jacobs is tough, and it's a great match. With Chavez it's very possible because he just made 168 pounds and could it be at that weight, but Canelo you know it's the biggest fight that we could do right now."
If a deal with Jacobs is not reached and it goes to a purse bid, the fight will likely fall apart as there s a 75-25 monetary split in favor of the champion. Jacobs has already stated that he won't move forward under those terms.
"Well that would be his decision and we would respect it, but GGG intends to go for all of the championships and that would be the opportunity to go for one more. But we will try to reach an agreement. We know that GGG wants the fight and Jacobs wants the fight, and we will try to get the missing details," Loeffler said.
