BoxingScene.com was on hand for one of Gennady Golovkin's recent sparring sessions as he prepares for his June 29th showdown against Mathew Macklin. Golovkin has held his recent training camps up in the high altitude of Big Bear, CA at his trainer Abel Sanchez's facility called The Summit. He said that everything has gone smoothly.

"My training camp has been fantastic. I have had a great time. I've had great sparring and everything is going well.  My guys have helped me. Every two rounds we like to change them up so that we can have a fresh guy with a different style," Golovkin stated.

The knockout artist known as "GGG" is expecting a tough fight against Macklin. The Irish fighter lost to Sergio Martinez last year but gave a very good account of himself.

"Macklin is very good. I think it will be a very difficult fight because he has good power and speed. I remember watching his fight versus Sergio Martinez and it was a very close fight, a tough fight. It will be very difficult for us," Golovkin predicted.

I asked Golovkin if he looked at this fight as the one that will cross him over to being a star in the United States.

"Exactly. Right now I think this is a very big step for us," Golovkin stated while pointing out that the fight he really wants is a fight against Martinez himself.

"He got hurt but next year would be great for me. We would have plenty of time to prepare for the fight. I am very happy with the way things are going. That is a fight we really want," Golovkin revealed.
