Former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa said that he wasn't surprised when Brandon Rios failed to make weight for his April 14th fight against Richard Abril at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Rios weighed in at 137 pounds, which was 2 pounds over the lightweight limit.
"I wasn't surprised that he was over on the weight. I would have fought him at 140 and still beat him. The weight wouldn't have been a problem for me," said Gamboa, who was originally going to be Rios' opponent before he withdrew from the fight over a dispute with his promotional contract.
Gamboa feels that his countryman Abril was robbed of a deserved victory over Rios and said that he had predicted that Abril would defeat his Mexican-American adversary.
"I knew Abril would beat him. I knew Abril would outbox him. Rios is one dimensional."
The Cuban born fighter wouldn't comment on his ongoing legal battle with Top Rank, but he did reveal that when he does return to the ring he still plans on moving up to the lightweight division.
"I'm still moving up to 135. That is the plan," Gamboa stated.
