TYSON FURY REINFORCED his position as the premier heavyweight on the planet on a mesmerizing night underneath the giant illuminated arch at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
It was a magical event, made so special by the 94,000 people packed into the nation’s biggest venue who created an atmosphere that ensures the occasion will live long in the memory.
It couldn’t have gone any better from our perspective. The feedback has been fantastic and it appears that everybody enjoyed the spectacle and will hopefully return for more of the same in future.
Tyson certainly knows how to put on a show and it was up to us to create some added sparkle and I think you will agree this was successfully accomplished.
After all this being said, I repeat that it is the people that make a sporting spectacle so special and I would like to thank everyone who attended and also those who we couldn’t accommodate who tuned in on BT Sport Box Office, who I think did a fantastic job during the build-up and on the night.
Some of the promotional content they delivered was first class and unsurpassed in my opinion.
The night was really all about one man doing his thing on his home stage after conquering America over the last few years. He truly is a global superstar and the way the British public has embraced him, I know he truly appreciates.
It was sad to read a newspaper column questioning his status as a people’s champion, which he clearly is. It is the general public who determine who is considered a people’s champion, not newspaper columnists.
The public can relate to Tyson because he is so open, up front and accessible. He doesn’t surround himself with agents and image makers, he gets on with the job and you take him as you find him. I believe Tyson is now the most popular and recognizable individual sportsman in the country.
He was far too sharp for Dillian Whyte, whose limitations were brutally exposed by his speed and movement. I always felt there would be shades of the Dereck Chisora fights in this one and so it proved.
A big punch and bravery is never going to be enough to topple Tyson, who is now making a mockery of the theory that he doesn’t carry knockout power.
What comes next for Tyson we will all have to wait and see. Questions on the subject are inevitable, but often futile, straight after a huge fight. Let him enjoy his home comforts for a few months and then he will be better placed to fully determine his fighting future.
Whatever happens, Tyson’s place in the pantheon of pugilistic greats is already assured.
