Promoter Frank Warren, in his recent website article, said that David Haye wants no part of WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli. Warren offered Haye a bout with Maccarinelli for July 21 at the International Arena in Cardiff, Wales, but Haye, the mandatory challenger to the WBC/WBA titles, passed on the fight for a chance to meet Jean Marc Mormeck for the titles.
"David Haye said this week that he would prefer to fight Jean Marc Mormeck than take on Enzo Maccarinelli, for me confirming that he never fancied it against the Welshman," Warren said. "The fight was there for Haye earlier this year, but he refused to put pen to paper when Enzo had already signed."
Warren said that he spoke with promoter Don King about a unification tournament and Haye's decision ruins the proposed idea. He still has doubts that Haye, who recently debuted as a heavyweight, will make the cruiserweight limit.
"It's a shame, because I was talking to Mormeck's promoter Don King this week and we agreed that we could have put on a cracking cruiserweight tournament. The winner of Haye-Maccarinelli could have faced whoever came through a unification fight between WBA/WBC champion Mormeck and IBF title holder Steve Cunningham. Mormeck-Haye will now go to purse bids, but I'm still not convinced that Haye will make the weight limit for the fight," Warren said.
