As BoxingScene.com previously reported, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs) is considering the possibility of retirement. Last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Mayweather decisioned Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30KOs) to capture the WBA's junior middleweight title.
Mayweather believes the playing field is a little thin. With the exception of Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather doesn't see any serious contenders to his throne. Potential opponents, like Saul "Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan, are several fights away from a Mayweather showdown.
There are some experts who feel Mayweather is dangling the possibility of retirement in order to entice Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum to resume negotiations for a Pacquiao fight. Mayweather denies that his inability to fight Pacquiao will play a role in his decision to possibly retire.
"I'm entitled to make certain moves that I want to make in my life. That's the great thing about my career - if Floyd Mayweather wants to continue to fight, he's gonna fight. If Floyd Mayweather is going to retire, that's what he's going to do. You guys have been great. The media has been great. The fans have been great. I just don't know what the future holds for Floyd Mayweather at this particular time," Mayweather said.
As previously noted, Mayweather says the current probability that he'll retire this year is "80-20" - in favor of retiring from boxing.
