Floyd Mayweather expressed his hope he can help develop a fighter to emulate him after declaring himself retired following his win over Andre Berto in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, who retained his WBC and WBA welterweight titles, equalled former heavyweight great Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record on Saturday night with a unanimous decision victory over fellow American Berto at the MGM Grand.

The 38-year-old champion had repeated in the build-up to the bout his insistence it would be his last, and said in his in-ring interview immediately after the contest: "My career is over, that's official.

"You've got to know when to hang it up. I'm close to 40 now. There's nothing left to prove in the sport of boxing. Now I just want to spend time with my family."

And shortly afterwards, in his post-fight press conference, Mayweather said: "I've accomplished everything in the sport, so now it is time for me to help these young fighters break my record.

"I want to see my records broken - and of course, I want to be a part of it."

Mayweather once again stressed he would not be tempted to make a comeback.

And he added: "I've been in this sport my whole life and they say I'm wrong to say I'm the best.

"Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Larry Holmes, there are so many legendary champions that have opened up the doors and paved the way for me to be where I am at today, and I'm appreciative.

"But these young fighters in the audience, they know the truth. They say 'we want to be like Mayweather'.

"It's not cool to take punishment. I get a little bump and a bruise, but it's okay.

"That's what I tell these guys all the time - I'm not perfect, but I strived to be a perfectionist."

Mayweather beat Berto with scores of scores of 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111. It had been claimed Berto was an unworthy opponent, having suffered three defeats in his six fights prior to this bout.

And Mayweather said: "I didn't overlook this guy. I knew he was going to come, but experience was the key.

"Even if it had been his night, so be it - I would still be TBE (The Best Ever).

"He gained some fame from me, I'm pretty sure it is going to open up some more doors for him, and I'm glad I was able to put him in that position.

"But it didn't matter what opponent I chose - it was still going to be the same result.

"Never bet against me. Can you just imagine how your bank balance would look if you had bet with me 49 times? Just imagine.

"I had a game plan from the very beginning.

"I always knew what I wanted to do - be outspoken, be one of a kind.

"To be in the sport for 19 years and to be world champion for 18 years, I've had a remarkable career."
