When it comes to cash cow Canelo Alvarez, even the ever-cocksure Chris Eubank Jr. understands his place within the boxing hierarchy.

Eubank, the longtime middleweight contender from England, recently entertained the idea of facing the Mexican superstar and 168-pound undisputed champion, saying it's hard for him to envision a more lucrative fight than that match-up.

At the same time, Eubank said he won’t exactly devote his time trying to lure Alvarez into the ring, since Alvarez, Eubank contends, moves to his own beat as one of the biggest box office attractions in the sport.

“Canelo goes where the money is,” Eubank told Sky Sports. “I can’t think of any bigger money fights than me versus Canelo. I know he wants to fight in the UK, it’s a huge market. There aren’t many other guys there that people would like to see fight more than me and Alvarez. He’s one of them guys, he really does make the rules. He does what he wants. He moves up in weight, he comes down in weight, he holds belts in different weight divisions, and he does all these things that other fighters could never do. So, it’s hard to kind of target him.

“You can’t target Canelo Alvarez. Whenever he wants to come and fight he’ll fight. He’ll look at the options, ‘OK yeah, that’s going to be a good money fight, I think I can beat him.’ And he just does what he wants. So, I’m not really so much targeting him. If it comes, it comes, great. You can’t chase him. He does what he wants.”

The 33-year-old Eubank (33-3, 24 KOs) lately has been on cloud nine, thanks to his dominant 10th-round stoppage of Liam Smith in their middleweight rematch that took place earlier this month in Manchester, England. Eubank suffered a disastrous fourth-round stoppage to Smith in their first fight in January.

Since gaining revenge on Smith, Eubank has mentioned being interested in fights with Gennadiy Golovkin, Kell Brook, and Conor Benn.

Eubank said he would be motivated to fight Alvarez in part because of how Alvarez has dispatched his countrymen in recent years. Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) has built a reputation for knocking off British fighters, including, most recently, John Ryder, Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith, Rocky Fielding, Liam Smith, and Amir Khan. But for that to happen, Eubank says he would need the support of the public.

Alvarez will defend his four 168-pound belts against undisputed 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo on Sept. 30 in Las Vegas.

“For sure, they call him the Brit slayer,” Eubank said. “People know I’m not going to go down without a fight. I’m not going to get in there and freeze up. I’m going to go in there and I’m gonna take it to him. That’s what people want to see and that’s the fight he needs to be in, whether he’ll accept a fight like that is to be seen. 

“But yeah, tell the fans, get the fans to speak up. Get the polls out there, demanding that he fights guys that know how to bring it to him—like me.”
