New York - Many in the boxing world feel that Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KO's) is on the steps to stardom and may carry the sport for years to come. From the point of turning pro after the 2012 Olympic games, he was given high expectations.
But it wasn’t until earlier this year that he opened many eyes with his destruction of a very durable former world champion Chris Algieri. Since that performance, many have told Spence that fighting Leonard Bundu (33-1-2, 12 KO's) will be easy but to his credit, he is not taking the veteran lightly.
“Nothing has changed but the expectation,” Spence told BoxingScene.com. “Everyone thought the Algieri was going to be a hard fight and I made it look easy. Now everyone is saying this fight with Bundu is going to be easy but I’m preparing for a tough fight.”
Many feel that Spence may be avoided after his domination of Algieri. Title holders in his division like Keith Thurman and Kell Brook are fights Spence wants and the young contender feels that once he wins a world title, those fights will come.
“Kell Brook and Keith Thuman, they went for the bigger fights,” stated Spence. “They went for the money. You know Kell Brook moved up in weight for the money. Keith Thurman fought Shawn Porter for the money and I guess Shawn Porter had the bigger name at the time. I’m moving my way up. This is a title eliminator, so after this I fight for a world title. Then I got something they want.”
Win or lose, not many pundits expect Kell Brook to return to 147 lbs. Although Spence would love to fight Brook for the IBF welterweight world title, he’s not sure of Brook’s next move. But says he’s willing to stamp his passport to fight Brook.
“I don’t know. I’m not really on his mind,” Spence said of Brook. “I just want to fight for the world title and win my world title but I definitely travel to England to fight Kell Brook.”
