Two-time Olympian Dzmitry Asanau aims to continue the success from his amateur career to the pros.

Asanau will meet unbeaten Laid Douadi in a 10-round lightweight bout on Thursday at the Montreal Casino in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Asanau, 10-0 (4 KOs), competed in the 2016 Rio Games and 2021 Tokyo Games. He defeated former titleholder Hector Luis Garcia in the opening round of the 2016 Olympic Games. He holds amateur wins over Andy Cruz, former titleholder Murodjon Akhmadaliev, and Tsendbaatar Erdenebat. Given his amateur success, Asanau hopes to be in the title mix soon. Entering this fight, he is ranked No.8 by the WBC.

“My amateur career is good,” Asanau told BoxingScene. “It was a good experience to prepare me to be a pro.”

Asanau fought in April, defeating Francesco Patera via a 10-round unanimous decision. Patera’s other two defeats are to former titleholder Keyshawn Davis and Gary Cully. When asked how far from a title he is, Asanau said, “Maybe two to three fights to be at the top.”

Watching his father train fighters at the gym at two or three years old formed his passion for the sport. His first amateur fight was at either seven or eight years old – Asanau couldn’t remember exactly.

“After my first competition, I said to myself, I need to win, I want to be a boxer,” Asanau said. “I wanted to be a boxer because it is an individual sport.”

Asanau was born in Molodechno, Belarus, and recalled also playing soccer, but not liking it as much, because it was a team sport. He couldn’t control the outcome of the game as much as in boxing. He now lives in Dubai, with his training camps being held in Montreal.

For his upcoming fight against the 32-year-old French fighter Douadi, 27-0-1 (3 KOs), he did a seven-week training camp in Montreal. Before signing with Eye of the Tiger Management, Asanau had issues with activity in his previous promotional situation. This will mark his fourth fight since working with his new promoter.

“It was a tough training camp,” Asanau said. “I think on September 4 we will show something good, something beautiful.”
