The driver of the car in the crash that injured former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and killed two of his friends in Nigeria days ago was charged in court Friday.

The Ogun State Police Command informed the public via press release and its social media account that Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged in Sagamu Magistrate Court.

Kayode was at the wheel of the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele when it collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. Ghami and Ayodele, who were close friends and members of Joshua’s team, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Kayode was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid driver's license, the BBC reported via a police source.

Kayode was reportedly granted bail at 5,000,000 naira (about $3,500 or £2,578) and remanded pending his bail conditions being met. His case has been adjourned to January 20.

Joshua was briefly hospitalized after the crash but required no surgery and suffered no serious injuries.

A former two-time unified heavyweight champion, Joshua is of Nigerian descent. He was spending time in the country with Ghami and Ayodele, both 36, after his knockout victory over Jake Paul on December 19 in Miami.
