At 38-years-old and with a great career, Nonito Donaire does not see retirement in the near future because he still has a goal to meet.
The dream for Donaire is to collect all of the bantamweight championships before he considers hanging up his gloves.
Even at 38, the former world champion says he feels great and he could see himself fighting for 5 or 10 more years.
But for now, his mission is to dethrone WBC world champion Nordine Oubaali on May 29 in Carson, California.
Should he win, Donaire will hunt for a rematch against Japan's Naoya Inoue and, if possible, a second fight with Guillermo Rigondeaux.
“I have a dream which is to be the undisputed bantamweight champion, and at 38-years-old I think I am capable of doing it. The first step is on May 29 against Nordine Oubaali, a good fighter, but he's never faced an opponent like me, and then we are definitely going to pursue a rematch with Inoue and gather the rest of the belts,” said Donaire.
Nonito has not fought since October 2019, when he took part in a tremendous fight with Inoue, who suffered a broken nose and orbital bone, although in the end he won a decision in the final bout of the World Boxing Super Series tournament.
Oubaali has not fought since that same day, when he saw action on the undercard and defeated Takuma Inoue, Naoya's brother.
“I feel good, at 38-years-old I have had to change some things, take good care of my diet, train much better, but if I continue to feel this way, I will be able to fight for 5 or 10 more years. I want to achieve many things, but first I have to show what I can do on May 29. We are ready to give a great fight and show that I am better than Oubaali. Without a doubt I believe that I am capable of knocking him out,” said Donaire.
